2.7% of businesses started in 2025 closed within the year

08/03/2026 – Il Sole 24 Ore published an analysis on the business survival index developed by InfoCamere based on Business Register data, highlighting how 2.7% of businesses started in 2025 ceased operations by year-end.

In absolute values, 8,830 businesses out of 323,533 new registrations did not survive their first year, confirming a structural trend already emerged in the previous two years. InfoCamere data shows significant territorial differences: Emilia Romagna records the highest rate (3.6%), followed by Piedmont (3.2%), while Sardinia and Basilicata show the lowest percentages. By sector, financial and insurance activities reach 5.5% closures (622 out of 11,262 openings), followed by energy supply exceeding 4%. Wholesale and retail trade counts the highest absolute number of closures: 1,853 businesses, equal to 4.8% of 38,999 annual openings.
